MECHANICSBURG, Pa. (NWSA) -- The 1998 winners of the Navy Captain Edward F. Ney Memorial Awards and the Marine Corps Major General W. P. T. Hill Memorial Awards for outstanding food service in the Navy and Marine Corps were announced Feb. 6 by Navy Secretary John H. Dalton.
Formal presentation of the awards will be made in Norfolk on March 27 during the International Food Service Executives Association (IFSEA) Annual Conference and Seminar. Ney Awards are presented in afloat, ashore and hospital food service categories.
First place afloat galley winners are:
-- Submarine: USS Springfield (SSN 761);
-- Small: USS Willamette (AO 180);
-- Medium: USS Chosin (CG 65);
-- Large: USS Belleau Wood (LHA 3); and
-- Aircraft Carrier: USS Abraham Lincoln (CVN 72).
First place ashore galley winners are:
-- Small: Naval Magazine, Lualualei, Hawaii;
-- Medium: Submarine Base Pearl Harbor; and
-- Large: Naval Air Station Oceana, Va.
First place hospital galley winners are:
-- Small: Naval Hospital Guam; and
-- Large: Naval Medical Center San Diego.
Ney runner-up awards in the afloat category are:
-- Submarine: USS Charlotte (SSN 766);
-- Small: USS Underwood (FFG 36);
-- Medium: USS Cole (DDG 67);
-- Large: USS Simon Lake (AS 33); and
-- Aircraft Carrier: USS George Washington (CVN 73).
Ney runner-up awards in the ashore category are:
-- Small: Naval Air Station Brunswick, Maine; and
-- Medium: Naval Air Weapons Station Point Mugu, Calif.
-- Large: Naval Air Station Pensacola, Fla.
Ney runner-up awards in the hospital category
are:
-- Small: Naval Hospital Charleston, S.C.; and
-- Large: National Naval Medical Center Bethesda, Md.
The Marine Corps Hill award recipients are to:

Ney and Hill awards recognize overall food service excellence by judging key areas in customer service, restauranteurship, cleanliness and management. Each category was evaluated by an independent team which reviewed food preparation, management, administration, equipment safety, sanitation, plastic waste and disposal.
The Ney Awards were established in 1958 and the Hill Awards in 1985 by the Secretary of the Navy and IFSEA to improve and recognize quality food service in the Navy and Marine Corps. IFSEA is a food service industry trade association whose members include executive chefs, operators, dietitians, consultants, managers and owners of catering firms, restaurants, hotels and clubs.
More than 430 general messes competed initially for the Navy Ney Awards, while 132 Marine active and reserve messes vied for the Marine Corps Hill Awards.
