Ney and Hill Award Winners Named The 1999 winners of the Navy Captain Edward F. Ney Memorial Awards and the Marine Corps Major General W. P. T. Hill Memorial Awards for outstanding food service in the Navy and Marine Corps were announced today by Navy Secretary Richard Danzig. Formal presentation of the Ney and Hill Awards will be made in San Diego, CA on March 12, 1999, during the International Food Service Executives Association (IFSEA) Annual Conference and Seminar. Hill awards, presented in three categories, went to:
The Hill award for Runner-Up Messhall: Marine Corps Air Station, Yuma, Ariz., Messhall 710, Commander Marine Corps Air Bases Western Area. The Ney Awards were established in 1958 and the Hill Awards in 1985 by the Secretary of the Navy and IFSEA to improve and recognize quality food service in the Navy and Marine Corps. IFSEA is a food service industry trade association whose members include executive chefs, operators, dietitians, consultants, managers and owners of catering firms, restaurants, hotels, and clubs. The Ney and Hill Awards recognize overall food service excellence by evaluating key areas in customer service, restauranteurship, cleanliness and management. Each category was evaluated by an independent team which reviewed food preparation, management, administration, equipment safety, sanitation, plastic waste and disposal. Sailors and Marines - the people who eat in the mess hall or the general mess - are the ultimate winners. More than 403 general messes competed initially for the Navy Ney Awards while 132 Marine active and reserve messes vied for the Marine Corps Hill Awards. The Ney Awards are administered by the Naval Supply Systems Command (NAVSUP); the Hill Awards are administered by the U.S. Marine Corps Facilities and Services Division, Installations and Logistics Department. NAVSUP's primary mission is to provide U.S. Naval Forces with quality supplies and services. With headquarters in Mechanicsburg, PA, and employing a worldwide work force of more than 820 military personnel and approximately 11,000 civilians, NAVSUP oversees logistics programs in the areas of supply operations, contracting, resale, fuel, transportation, security assistance and mobile fleet hospital support. In addition, NAVSUP is responsible for Quality of Life issues for our naval forces, including food service, postal services, Navy Exchanges, and movement of household goods.
